Government License & Certification

Trade License

A trade licence is issued by the local urban body, such as a municipal corporation, municipality or panchayat, for carrying on a specific trade or business at a specific address within its limits. It is governed by each state’s Municipal Corporation Act, so the process, documents and fees differ from state to state. Licences are usually valid for one year and must be renewed annually, with late renewal attracting a penalty.

Service Overview

What is Trade License?

A trade licence is a permit granted by the local municipal authority that allows a person or business to operate a particular trade at given premises, mainly to enforce health, safety and environmental standards. It is trade-specific and location-specific. It does not imply ownership of the property.

It is separate from the Shops and Establishments licence issued under the state labour law and from MSME or Udyam registration. A business may need all of them. Examples of the state laws include the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980 and the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976.

Who Needs This Service

Shops, restaurants and cafes, factories and workshops, warehouses, clinics, salons, hotels and other businesses operating from commercial premises within municipal limits need a trade licence. Businesses dealing in food, hazardous goods or activities that affect public health are usually subject to closer scrutiny.

Startups and small businesses that rent commercial space should check with the local authority at the start, because operating without a licence can result in fines and closure notices.

Home-based businesses may also need a licence depending on the activity and local rules. Online-only businesses that do not operate from a physical premises may not need one but should check state rules.

Landlords sometimes ask tenants for a trade licence before finalising a lease, so having one in place helps you move into premises smoothly.

Timelines and fees depend on the municipal body.
