CRS Certification

The BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS, Scheme-II) covers electronics and IT goods notified by MeitY, and some products notified by other ministries. A manufacturer, Indian or foreign, gets a registration (R-number) allowing it to use the Standard Mark based on self-declaration of conformity supported by a test report from a BIS-recognised laboratory. The application is made online, registration is valid for two years and is renewable. Foreign manufacturers must nominate an Authorized Indian Representative.

What is CRS Certification?

CRS is Scheme-II under the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, introduced through the Electronics and IT Goods (Requirement for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012 (superseded in 2021), so that notified electronics and IT products meet Indian safety standards such as IS 13252 before being sold or imported. Unlike ISI, there is no factory audit; conformity is based on testing at BIS-recognised labs and the manufacturer’s self-declaration.

Products covered include laptops, tablets, printers, scanners, set-top boxes, mobile phones, power banks, smart watches, LED lamps and power adapters. Testing must be done at BIS-recognised labs only, and samples must reach the lab within 60 days of the test request. A single report can be shared across series and models as per guidelines.

Fees vary by source, with one page quoting a processing fee inclusive of one test report, so the BIS fee notification should be checked.
