A Licence for Operation from AERB is mandatory for operating medical diagnostic X-ray equipment under the Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004. No equipment may be operated for patient diagnosis without it. It is applied for through eLORA after RSO approval and procurement permission, is valid up to five years and is renewed through the eLORA renewal facility. Manufacturers of X-ray equipment and tubes need a separate a-priori licence for commercial production.

A licence for operation is the regulatory permission to use a radiation facility or equipment after AERB is satisfied that the installation, personnel and safety systems comply with the safety code. For existing, new and pre-owned diagnostic X-ray equipment, eLORA has separate application paths. Licence conditions include responsibilities of the employer, licensee and RSO under the Rules and AERB/SC/Med-2, periodic safety status reports and renewal before expiry.

Documents include eLORA institute registration, approved RSO with TLD number and training certificate, valid type approval or NOC of the equipment, procurement permission, QA report, room layout and shielding details, radiation safety devices, qualification certificates and previous licence details for renewal.
