What is Star Labeling?
The BEE Star Label is a mandatory or voluntary energy-efficiency label displayed on appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, LED lamps, washing machines, colour TVs, ceiling fans and geysers. It tells buyers how efficient a model is compared with others in the same category. The programme began in 2006 as voluntary and moves appliances to mandatory in phases, and BEE enforces it through check testing and challenge testing of market samples.
Testing at an NABL-accredited lab is mandatory regardless of any international certification, and not every lab is authorised for every product. Labels are valid for a label period fixed by BEE, and missed fee payments or production reports can lead to suspension of label permission. Coverage numbers differ across sources: BEE’s 2025 overview says 41 appliances, while other pages say about 29 to 30, an older figure.
