What is Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC)?
The Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) is a national code developed by BEE, first launched in May 2007, updated in 2017 and amended in 2020, that defines minimum standards for building envelope, comfort systems and controls, lighting and controls, and electrical and renewable energy systems. It offers three compliance approaches: Mandatory, Prescriptive and Whole Building Performance, and ‘ECBC Plus’ and ‘Super ECBC’ levels for higher performance.
States have the flexibility to modify the code and must notify rules to enforce it. As of the sources, about 23 of 28 states had notified ECBC rules, with only 15 on ECBC 2017, and states such as Gujarat and Maharashtra were yet to notify. One source also mentions a built-up area of 1,000 sq m as a trigger, which should be confirmed with the state.
