Water Report

A water test report is a laboratory analysis of the water used as an ingredient or in food handling, required as a supporting document for an FSSAI State or Central licence application, and often for renewal. FoSCoS asks for a chemical and bacteriological analysis report from a recognised or public health laboratory confirming potability, showing the name of the lab representative who collected the sample and the date of collection.

Service Overview

What is Water Report?

A water analysis (potability) report certifies that the water used in food preparation or as an ingredient meets drinking-water standards, i.e. potable water as per BIS IS 10500. It covers chemical and bacteriological parameters. For packaged drinking or mineral water units, the licence application also needs a pesticide residue report of the source water and, for ground-water extraction, a CGWA NOC.

The FoSCoS sample document says reports should be from a ‘recognized/public health laboratory’, while a private compliance guide says only NABL-accredited labs are accepted, so using an NABL-accredited or FSSAI-notified lab is the safe choice. One source says reports should be recent, not older than six months.

Water Report

Who Needs This Service

Restaurants, caterers, food manufacturers, packaged drinking water and beverage units, and any food business applying for or renewing a State or Central FSSAI licence need a water test report.

Businesses that use municipal water, borewell water or treated water should all test, because the licence authority wants proof of potability.

Companies that use water as a key ingredient, such as beverage makers, need to maintain regular testing.

If your water source changes, you should test again.

Key Benefits

  • Report from a suitable lab with required sample details
  • Chemical and bacteriological parameters covered
  • Extra reports for packaged water units
  • Upload-ready documents
  • Regular testing schedule advice

Next Steps & Related Services

After the report, upload it with the FSSAI application.

Related services: FSSAI State and Central licences, Renewal, HACCP and GMP.

Common Mistakes

  • Sending your own sample instead of lab collection.
  • Using a non-recognised lab.
  • Using an old report.
  • Missing pesticide residue tests for packaged water.
  • Not retesting after changing water source.

Timeline, Costs & Practical Tips

Lab turnaround is typically several days.

Practical tip: book the test early, since the report is needed before filing.

Additional Information

FSSAI hygiene requirements under Schedule 4 require use of potable water in food handling. The report provides evidence of compliance.

Practical Scenarios

Scenario 1:

A restaurant tests borewell water before licence application.

Scenario 2:

A beverage unit tests process water.

Scenario 3:

A packaged water plant obtains pesticide and microbiological reports.
